SUMMARY:On the Road Tour – Spring into Gardening!
DESCRIPTION:Join the WSU Extension Clark County Master Gardener program for an on-the-road- tour and leave the driving to us! Thursday\, April 24 from 8:30 to 3:30pm. It’s springtime again! Time to get your hands dirty and watch the flowers bloom! Our first stop on the tour is the A&R nursery. Eighty acres are devoted to grass farming and the remaining eight acres is for the plant nursery. They have a wonderful selection of flowering plants in their greenhouses plus several acres of trees and shrubs. Lisa will be giving a talk on a selection of plants that can be found in the nursery. Our next stop is Tsugawa Nursery. They have over five acres of retail space and specialize in Japanese maples\, bonsai\, and water gardens with an emphasis on the new and unusual! Their expert on native plants will give a talk on spring pollinators. Our last stop is the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens. Cost: $35 plus $10 cash for entry to the Hulda Klager Garden. The gardens are a restoration project to honor Hulda Klager. We will be able to tour the 1800 ‘s house while we celebrate the Lilac Days and their 50th anniversary. Lunch is on your own at Los Pepe’s. Shopping is available at all three stops. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Vans depart from and return to Enterprise Rental (Hazel Dell/Vancouver). The location provides a view of several areas around Hood River where we can observe the impact of planting decisions made based on microclimate.\n\nNext stop is Good News Gardening\, where the owner will talk about efforts to help people make informed choices about plants for specific locations\, expanding our understanding of microclimates and choosing the “right plant for the right place.” They offer expert advice to help make garden dreams come true. Good News Gardening has thousands of plants as well as a beautiful gift shop.\nLunch is on your own at Bette’s Place\, where they specialize in homemade food made fresh daily.\n\nOur last stop is Packer Orchards and Farm Place\, a family-owned orchard and bakery\, where we will learn about how their operation deals with Hood River microclimates. DESCRIPTION:Join the WSU Extension Clark County Master Gardener program for an on-the-road- tour and leave the driving to us! Featuring plants for your late summer and fall garden\, our first stop is Al’s Garden Center in Woodburn\, where we will learn about favorite fall plants plus Al’s specialty plant\, the\nmountain laurel. This North American shrub has many special characteristics\, including bell-shaped flowers with fused petals that resemble origami rice bowls. It’s a fantastic pollinator plant as well.\nGarden World in Hubbard is the next stop. They have ten acres of plants and trees\, including many unique varieties. The focus here will be Japanese Maples. Lunch is at the Backstop Bar & Grill in Canby\, OR (note: lunch is not included in the tour cost). Our last stop will be at Swan Island Dahlias where they are celebrating their August-September Festival. You can stroll through almost forty acres of dahlias featuring over 370 varieties or just visit their display garden. Pick out your favorite dahlias for spring delivery. DESCRIPTION:2024 is a big year for the sun! Every 11 years the sun’s magnetic pole flips. Leading up to this event is a period of increased solar activity – from sunspots and solar flares to spectacular northern lights.\nJoin the WSU Extension Clark County Master Gardeners for a free daytime telescope viewing event for the whole family. All are welcome; educational content will be geared toward elementary school-aged children. Saturday\, August 17\n9am to 11am. Vancouver (Hazel Dell area.)
