SUMMARY:Fruit Tree Pruning workshop - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Increase the beauty and productivity of your fruit trees with this informative\, two-part\, hands-on pruning class by locally renowned fruit tree expert\, Monica Maggio. Timely pruning can improve the shape\, strength\, and fruit set of your trees\, and help reduce pest and disease pressure.\n \nPart One is a Friday evening lecture\, delivered via Zoom\, that will cover general pruning theory. Friday\, May 29 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm via Zoom.\nPart Two is a Saturday in-field session that includes experiential instruction on specific techniques to help you learn how to make the best cuts on your fruit trees with confidence and skill. Saturday\, May 30 from 10am to 12 noon at 1919 NE 78th Street\, Vancouver\, WA 98665. This will be held rain or shine. This portion will include standing and walking the whole time. Dress for the weather and bring water. No tools necessary.\n \nCost: $50 for both Part One and Part Two. Attendance for the Zoom-only Part One portion of the class is $20. Are you restless on those rainy days you’re stuck in the house perusing seed catalogs? Excited at the prospect of planting new things and getting your hands dirty in your garden?\n \nJoin the Clark County Master Gardeners for our first tour of 2026. Meet in the parking lot of the 78th Street Heritage Farm at 8:15AM to board our vans for a tour of some Portland locations to help ease the transition into our next gardening season. Our first stop will be Garden Fever where we will be treated to talk on what’s new and what’s tried and true for 2026.\n \nOur next stop will be a Portland staple – Portland Nursery – to get more info on great things for our gardens. There will be ample time at both locations to pick out your new favorite plant.\nNext\, we will break for lunch at McMenamins Cedar Hills Pub. They have a menu featuring sandwiches\, salads and burgers. Lunch is on your own.\n \nAt our final stop of the day\, Deby Barnhart of Cornell Farm will speak to the group about plant diversity. There will be time for shopping. We will return to the Heritage Farm in the vans arriving at approximately 4:45PM. Wednesday\, March 26 from 8:15am to 4:45pm. Cost: $35. SUMMARY:Container Fruit Tree Grafting Workshop; Small is Beautiful!
DESCRIPTION:Western Washington is not conducive to growing stone fruits like peaches and apricots because they suffer from rain-spread diseases. However\, growing them in containers that can be covered during the rainy season solves this problem! This workshop provides directions for successfully growing stone fruits such as peaches\, nectarines and apricots using dwarfing rootstock and growing in containers. Topics include appropriate containers and soil mixes\, pruning for container growing and ideas for keeping the trees dry through the winter and spring. Each participant will graft and take home their own stone fruit (peach\, nectarine\, apricot\, etc.) tree. Saturday\, March 28 from 1 to 3:30pm in Vancouver\, WA. Cost: $15 (plus tax\, fees).
