From Desert to Abundance: A Journey Through Food, Farming, and Community in the PNW by Heidi Roth
Growing up in a food desert in northern Arizona sparked Heidi’s passion for finding good,
healthy food. Her journey began while traveling for work, inspiring her to recreate incredible
dishes at home. When sourcing organic ingredients proved challenging, she started a small food
blog to document those efforts. Five years ago, Heidi consciously moved to Washington, drawn
by its vibrant slow food movement. Living on her sister’s farm and working for a Thurston
County destination marketing organization expanded her journey as a content creator,
exploring sustainable practices, questioning our food system, and highlighting local chefs who
source from local growers. This experience ultimately led her to understand the foundational
agricultural practices shaping it all. Her current obsession is uncovering how small growers and
gardeners can cultivate resilience and achieve water-wise success, especially through dry
farming in our unique Pacific Northwest climate.

Heidi’s talk will be a journey through her personal experiences and discoveries, offering insights
and stories on everything from navigating food deserts to empowering small growers with
water-wise and dry farming techniques, and exploring the profound community-building
aspects of growing and sharing good food.
